The images in this gallery are produced from a Holga camera. The Holga is an inexpensive medium format mass market Chinese camera. It was intended for working class Chinese to record family portraits and events. Its simple plastic lens and cheap construction often yield images that display vignetting, blurring, light leaks and other distortions. For me, it lends a an ethereal, surrealistic quality to the image that sometimes better translate the ideas of wonder and spirituality. It is a film camera, with very little control. This means workable images are harder to come by, as opposed to digital format or even most film cameras. For me, this makes the images unique and precious. The film I use is Kodak Provia 160, which produces colors that are vivid and saturated. For the black and white I use Ilford Pan F Plus 50.
The work is this gallery is shot within a five block radius from my home. The theme is finding awe and beauty in our immediate surroundings. Sometimes we are blinded by familiarity, unable to see wonder in front of us. But it is there, if we look.
