I believe the literal sometimes misses meaning. Even when mysterious or evocative, concrete words or images can fail in communication, especially in discussions of spirituality or the unknowable. While an image tending toward precision or even impressionistic can cause joy and wonder, the language is generally codified and influenced by culture. Abstractions, while based in natural phenomenon, can speak to me in a language outside conventions. These images help to free myself of language. Really, I consider them meditations.
Most of the images in this gallery are shot in macro. Utilizing special lenses affords extreme close up views. I will spend some time studying small bits of rock, dirt, detritus, or any ordinary objects. When, for whatever reason I focus on a particular area, I will capture an image.
